La Maison de Cheveux celebrates August as National Hair loss Awareness month! We are located in the Glendale/Phoenix area, also, home of the Arizona Cardinals!
When you hear the word “hair loss”, what comes to mind? Most would automatically think chemo patients or male pattern baldness. However, there are so many different types of hair loss such as,
- Female pattern baldness
- Alopecia
- Hair loss caused by stress, bad diet, medications
- Trichotillomania
In female pattern baldness hair thins mainly on the top and crown of the scalp. It usually starts with a widening through the center hair part. The front hairline remains unaffected except for normal recession, which happens to everyone as time passes. The hair loss rarely progresses to total or near total baldness, as it may in men.Itching or skin sores on the scalp are generally not seen.
Alopecia is the partial or complete absence of hair from areas of the body where it normally grows; baldness.
- Alopecia areata – hair is lost in patches.
- Alopecia totalis – hair is lost on the entire scalp.
- Alopecia universalis – all hair is lost including body & facial hair
- Alopecia barbae – beard hair is lost.
- Traction alopecia – hair loss caused by tension or trauma to the follicle
Hair loss can also be caused by stress, poor diet, age or side effects of medications. Unfortunately, once a hair follicle closes, there is no technology that will reopen it. There are remedies toretain existing hair but not to reopen a closed follicle.
Trichotillomania is a compulsive desire to pull out one’s hair. This means that people with the condition feel an overwhelming urge to pull their hair. They also may have other compulsive habits, such as nail biting or skin picking. Some also have problems like depression, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
I hope that I was able to shed some more light on the topic of hair loss. Here at La Maison de Cheveux in Phoenix, AZ, we specialize in non-surgical solutions. Consultations are complimentary, not everyone is a candidate.
